Hula Live Noise at The Mappin Art Gallery, Sheffield England, 26/8/1985. A special recording of a unique event: Hula were commissioned by Sheffield City Arts Department to put together a special performance to include certain sound sculptures featured in the Arts Council's touring Noise In Your Eye exhibition.
This recording is a document of that night.
Due to the popularity of this exhibition there was no possibility of a preparatory run-through or rehearsal of any sort therefore the nature of the evening was to be essentially one of let's put this, this and this together and see what happens. This, this and this took the forms of computerised slide shows in Gallery 5, several projections in and around the gallery spaces utilising the immoveable partitions and unused exhibits. An extraordinary sound system taxing the considerable ingenuity of Pip and John Ingham incorporating quadrophonic sound in the main gallery with an auxiliary speaker system placed halfway down the room. A stereo system in Gallery 5 with a seperate mix all designed to produce a fluid audio-visual environment into which the listening viewer could allow him/herself to be deliciously lost.
For best results this recording should be listened to on headphones.
The pieces on Side One and Two reflect the shifting moods of a continuous improvisation and are untitled.
