Cellist and vocalist with indie stars Belle & Sebastian, Isobel Campbell has recently been ploughing her own, very engaging, solo furrow with her band The Gentle Waves. The follow-up to 1999's The Green Fields Of Foreverland, this album is full of delicately dramatic Scottish chanson. Campbell lets her soft voice swell on a bed of comforting strings, 1960s beat pop horns and tinkling harpsichord. Though the tracks are sensitive reflections on love, friendship and childhood, they are never winsome. The sharp production and vivid arrangements give songs like "Falling From Grace" and "There Was Magic Then..." a rich, silvery quality. Swansong For You is the perfect chill-out record. --Lucy O'Brien
