The Dub Pistols hail from Leeds, England, and while they have released numerous recordings in their home country, Point Blank is their American debut. Led by ambitious DJ-composer Barry Ashworth, the Dub Pistols integrate a variety of compatible influences into an upbeat multicultural sound. With a strong emphasis on Jamaican dub and reggae as well as American hip-hop and British acid house, the Pistols create a pulsing, rhythmic stew appropriate for both listening on the home stereo and the urban dance floor. Ashworth's turntable skills and sampling choices are moderately impressive, but the band's drum programming keeps the music hurtling forward. Funkier than the Chemical Brothers, the Dub Pistols are just beginning to distinguish themselves from the pack. --Mitch Myers
